SOPA Wilsons Park & Blaxland Leachate Treatment Wetlands
About this project
Since 2021, RARE has been engaged by the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) to perform system integrity checks and ongoing monitoring for three key environmental treatment systems: the Former Golf Driving Range Treatment System, Wilson Park Bioremediation, and Blaxland Sustainable Leachate Treatment Wetlands.
These systems were developed to biologically treat landfill leachate, addressing specific contaminants before discharging into the Parramatta River.
RARE’s role includes analysing chemical monitoring data and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) data to ensure each system is functioning properly and meeting environmental standards. The Wilson Park system treats leachate to remove BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) and PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), while the Blaxland system focuses on ammonia removal.
All three systems use biological methods to treat landfill leachate in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner.
RARE also supports SOPA’s unique arrangement with the NSW EPA (Environmental Protection Authority), where the Wilson Park and Blaxland systems hold a preferred direct discharge licence to the Parramatta River. This arrangement requires constant real-time monitoring via a remote SCADA system, along with regular compliance sampling and reporting to the NSW EPA.
How we helped
- Weekly environmental inspections to ensure compliance against the project EPL.
- Fortnightly, monthly and ad hoc water quality monitoring, including water sampling.
- Monitoring of system to ensure all physical components of treatment system are functioning correctly.
