Select Civil were engaged by Wollongong City Council to install a debris control structure within Bellambi Gully. To facilitate these works, several hundred tonnes of accumulated sediment were required to be removed from three culverts located beneath Memorial Drive. Environmental testing undertaken by an independent environmental consultant identified widespread non-friable asbestos contamination throughout the sediment.

RARE Environmental, a highly experienced and fully licensed Class A asbestos removal contractor, was subsequently engaged to manage, remove and dispose the contaminated material under controlled conditions, enabling the civil construction works to safely proceed.

• Developed comprehensive project documentation, including a detailed Asbestos Removal Control Plan (ARCP) and regulator notifications, whilst ensuring all works complied with the requirements set out in the project Review of Environmental Factors (REF).
• Established robust asbestos management controls, including clearly signposted exclusion zones and a fully equipped decontamination area.
• Supervised all sediment removal activities within known contaminated areas, utilising a positrack and excavator, and coordinated with the Occupational Hygienist for ongoing air monitoring and final clearance inspections.
• Temporarily stockpiled and contained contaminated sediment under strict erosion and sediment control measures.
• Managed the progressive loadout of material into designated disposal trucks, coordinating and scheduling transport activities to the licensed facility in Sydney.
• Transported all asbestos-contaminated waste under EPA consignment tracking to an approved hazardous waste facility.
• Maintained continual communication and collaboration with the client to provide progress updates and identify opportunities to optimise scope and minimise material handling.
