Ventia operates a national facility maintenance contract for Telstra, which includes the identification, assessment, and removal of high-risk asbestos-containing materials (ACM). As a key specialist contractor, RARE plays a vital role in supporting Ventia with the nationwide execution of this contract.
As part of legislated routine testing at a Telstra Priority 1 (P1) site, friable asbestos dust was identified within the cable chamber and lift shafts.
RARE, a licensed friable asbestos removal contractor, was engaged to undertake the safe removal of the identified asbestos.
How we helped
- Completed extensive pre-works, onboarding, and approvals to facilitate works at the P1 site.
- Developed comprehensive project documentation, including Telstra-specific requirements, detailed Confined Space Management Plans, and regulator notifications.
- Collaborated with specialist trades to ensure seamless integration of the scope of work within the site’s ongoing operations, including lift functionality.
- Established the site under a negative pressure enclosure with strict confined space procedures, which were independently reviewed and certified.
- Executed the removal of friable asbestos dust from all accessible areas within the cable chamber and lift shafts over approximately six weeks, using specialised and certified asbestos removal equipment under fully controlled conditions with full PPE.
- Conducted continuous confined space monitoring, including hourly check-ins with the tunnel manager and ground crews.
- Safely managed and contained all asbestos waste by securing it in 200µm waste disposal bags for controlled load-out.
- Implemented rigorous personnel, plant, and equipment decontamination procedures within decontamination units throughout the project duration.
- Transported all asbestos waste under EPA tracking to a licensed disposal facility.
