RARE delivers new koala crossings to support NSW conservation strategy
Specialised over-pipeline and underfence crossings improve safe movement for koala populations in Sydney's southwest.

RARE has delivered critical new infrastructure to protect one of Australia’s most iconic species, completing specialised koala crossings in Appin, New South Wales, for Water NSW. The works form part of the NSW Government’s $80 million commitment to safeguarding koala populations in Sydney’s Southwest under its broader Koala Strategy, which focuses on habitat protection and improving long-term wildlife safety.
The project centred on constructing and installing a purpose-built crossing over Water NSW’s heritage-listed pipeline, providing a safe route across previously fragmented habitat. RARE also designed and built a series of underfence crossings to further support safe koala movement throughout the landscape.
To complete the works, RARE conducted detailed geotechnical investigations, fabricated the over-pipe bridge as a single structure, and constructed heritage-consistent access roads to enable crane installation. Additional works included concrete road construction and on-site delivery of hardwood underfence crossings tailored to each location.
